Virginia’s new 6th State Senate district encompasses Washington County, Wise County, Russell County, Scott County, Lee County, Buchanan County, Bristol City, Dickenson County, and Norton City. With almost 155,000 registered voters, this district leans strongly Republican.
This election will be held on November 7, 2023. Incumbent Republican Senator Todd Pillion is running unopposed in the general election for Virginia’s new 6th State Senate district. Senator Pillion has served in the State Senate since 2020. Prior to that, he served in the House of Delegates from 2014-2020.
Senator Todd Pillion has served in the State Senate since 2020. Prior to being elected to the Senate, he served in the House of Delegates from 2014 to 2020. Pillion and his wife, Amanda, currently reside in Abingdon with their four children. Pillion has voted against commonsense gun violence prevention legislation, including mandating background checks for gun buyers and making school board property gun-free zones. He voted against the Reproductive Health Protection Act, which removed medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion access. He also voted against repealing Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage. He opposed the establishment of sanctuary cities in Virginia, which would force localities to use their resources to do the job of the federal government and put immigrant families at risk of separation. He has consistently opposed reproductive rights and abortion access.

Senator Pillion is running unopposed, so we encourage you to write in a candidate of your choice. Regardless, get out and vote. Please remember that there are other races on the ballot as well.

Incumbent Republican Delegate Terry Kilgore has served in the House of Delegates since 1994. Kilgore does not support gun violence prevention legislation, and he has also supported anti-trans legislation to keep trans children from playing sports with their identified gender. He also supported legislation that requires schools to out trans students to their parents. There are no progressive recommendations for this race. However, we encourage you to write in the candidate of your choice, and remember that there are other races this election.
